Cabell Schools Announces no Reductions in Force Planned this School Year

At the regular meeting of the Cabell County Board of Education November 16, 2021, Cabell County Schools superintendent, Dr. Ryan Saxe, announced he will not be recommending any positions be reduced as part of the district’s regular budgeting process this school year.

“The board members, our leadership team and I all recognize how very stressful the past couple of years have been for our employees and their families,” says Dr. Saxe. “We hope the announcement we are not reducing positions provides our school community with added peace of mind as we enter what we hope is a wonderful season of thanksgiving and celebration.”

Dr. Saxe says while it has been challenging to operate schools during the pandemic, Cabell County’s professional and service employees have continued to show their commitment to providing the academic, social and emotional supports the district’s students require to be successful while also working to keep everyone in the school community safe and healthy.

“Our public school employees demonstrate every day just how much they care by doing whatever it takes to meet the needs of all Cabell County children. We are thrilled to honor them by taking this worry off their plates.”

Dr. Saxe explains the district is able to avoid the Reduction In Force (RIF) process this school year as the result of voter-approved excess levies and federal funding provided by the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSERF). ARP and ESSERF were created by the United States Congress and signed into law by the President to assist students and their schools in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During the course of the pandemic, the school district has added more than 100 full-time, regular positions in order to meet the academic, social, emotional, health and safety needs of our students,” says Dr. Saxe. “While the additional federal funding we have received is temporary, we are hopeful the investment in our employees announced today will provide their families with immediate relief as we continue to work together toward the long-term recovery of our region.”

Dr. Saxe says while he plans no reductions in force this school year, the district will still be required to place employees on transfer as appropriate to meet students’ academic needs and to address enrollment fluctuations affecting school and district operations. When an employee is on transfer, they are notified of a change, but are assured they will be placed in a position with no interruption in employment.
