The Cabell County Schools Excess Levy, which provides for 20.9 percent of the district’s general fund budget, will be included on the Cabell County primary election ballot Tuesday, May 8, 2018. Early voting will be offered from Wednesday, April 25 through Saturday, May 5, 2018.

The Excess Levy must be renewed every five years by Cabell County voters. The levy has been consistently renewed by voters since established in 1954.

Renewal of the Excess Levy only continues the levy already in place and does not raise taxes.

Excess Levy funds are utilized to provide educational materials for students such as textbooks; digital resources; computers and mobile devices; library books; and other instructional supplies. The levy also provides for additional classroom teachers, athletic coaches, activity sponsors, and extracurricular bus trips.

In addition to directly supporting instruction, the Excess Levy allows the district to provide benefits for employees including supplemental pay beyond the state minimum; dental and optical insurance; pay for department chairs; uniforms for service employees; extra pay for cooks and custodians; and staff development.

Finally, Excess Levy funds support both the Cabell County Public Library and the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District. Public libraries currently receive approximately $1,471,867 and public parks $455,229 annually from the Excess Levy.

Failure of the Excess Levy would result in a $24.1 million-dollar reduction of the school district’s annual budget beginning with the 2020-2021 school year.

Early Voting is open to any registered voter in the county.  Early voting will be conducted at the Cabell County Courthouse in the office of the Cabell County Clerk, 750 5th Avenue. Huntington, WV 25701; at the Marshall University Memorial Student Center on the campus of Marshall University, 1 John Marshall Drive, Huntington, WV 25755; and at the Cabell County Sheriff’s Field Office, 2726 Howells Mill Road, Ona, WV 25545.

Hours for Early Voting are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for both Saturdays during the early voting period.

Hours for voting on Election Day are 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM at polling places countywide.
