As part of the statewide “Leaders of Literacy: Campaign for Grade-Level Reading,” Cabell County Schools is working on a plan to offer free books to its youngest learners.

The district is partnering with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program to provide eligible children with a free, age-appropriate book every month from the time they are born until their fifth birthday.

The first step toward achieving this plan is to enroll children from ages birth to five who reside in the following zip codes: 25510, 25541, and 25702. To register your child, please visit the following link: https://imaginationlibrary.com/check-availability/

“We’re extremely pleased to be able to offer this service to our families,” says Kelly Watts, Cabell County Schools Assistant Superintendent over Instruction and Leadership. “We’re starting with a few zip codes now, but will continue to announce more as our plan is fully implemented.

The West Virginia “Leaders of Literacy: Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (GLR),” is the state’s implementation of a national effort to close the literacy achievement gap for children by the end of third grade. The state GLR campaign is the result of a collaboration between the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and the West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE). All 55 of the state’s counties have joined the nationwide Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (GLR) and have formed early literacy teams. These teams work at the local level, assembling resources and engaging community partners to increase reading achievement.

The WVDE’s Office of Early Learning and Marshall University’s June Harless Center provide support to county teams across the state as they write and carry out yearly action plans that focus on school readiness, attendance, extended learning, and high-quality instruction.
