Policy 5410 Promotion Policy

Grades 6-7:

Progress in grades 6, 7, and 8 shall be based on successful completion of separate classes. To be promoted from one grade to the next, a student must successfully complete six (6) credits. At least two (2) credits must be earned in language arts and mathematics.  Students may be accelerated into courses at the next grade level which are commensurate with their ability.

Grade 8

To be promoted to 9th Grade, a student must successfully complete sixteen (16) credits. At least thirteen (13) of the sixteen (16) credits must be from core classes (language arts, mathematics, social studies, or science), with six (6) of those credits being in mathematics and language arts.

Options for recovering failed credits may be recovering subjects, during support for personalized learning, demonstrating mastery on state assessment or demonstrating mastery on county chosen assessments. The school, the student, and the parents of the student must share in the responsibility of attaining education appropriate to the needs, interests, and ability of individuals.

Students who fail to meet criteria for promotion to 9th grade may be promoted by being placed on academic probation or through acceptance into the Career Connections Academy.

Grades 9-12:

Advancement in high school (grades 9-12) is based on accumulating credit toward graduation. A student must obtain a minimum of twenty-four (24) units in order to graduate. The student must successfully complete specific courses as prescribed in West Virginia State Board of Education policy 2510.

Students shall be promoted with the satisfactory completion of units in the following manner:

For the Class of 2001

From grade nine to grade ten

Four (4) Units

From grade ten to grade eleven

Minimum of 10 Units

From grade eleven to grade twelve

Minimum of 17 Units
